Hello, everyone!
Congrats to Chuck for being (almost) done with school! I've been done with school for a few weeks (yay homeschool), but I'm having a graduation ceremony/senior recital this Friday. I'm seriously stressing out about it. Also, you guys should know that I'm going on vacation with my family from June 23 until July 10, so although I will try to blog it may not happen. Just warning you in advance.
Okay, on to the theme! This week: movie questions.
What's the last movie you went to go see in theatres? How was it? Who did you go with?
I'm not entirely sure...but I think it was True Grit, which I saw with my family. I don't usually like Westerns, but I was surprised to find that I liked this movie. I think it's probably because I liked and maybe sort of identified with the heroine.
What movie(s) do you most regret watching?
Chuck: good answer. Percy Jackson is high on the list of books-that-were-utterly-ruined-by-the-movie. That and Eragon. *Shudder* However, believe it or not, I would have to name E.T. the Extra Terrestrial as the movie I most regret watching. I know it's a classic, and everyone should love it (which I do now!) but I was a very sensitive 6-year-old when I first saw it, and for some reason it traumatized me. For a year or two afterward, I literally could not even look at a picture of E.T. without getting freaked out. Sad but true.
What movie is coming up that you're really looking forward to?
This is a no-brainer. Harry Potter for sure. In my humble opinion, the 7th film was the best of all of them (mostly because it's truest to the source material), and I have faith that they'll do the final chapter justice. Harry Potter was my childhood, so I feel it's sort of appropriate that the last Harry Potter movie comes out the summer I turn 18.
If you could be any character from any movie (excluding Harry Potter), which would it be and why?
That's a hard one! So many to choose from. I guess, at this point, I'd either have to say August Rush or that one kid from X-men who has wings. I don't even remember his name; I just remember that he had wings and could fly. Which would be awesome. As for August Rush, who wouldn't want to be a child prodigy with a cellist for a mother and an Irish singer for a father? And also go to Juilliard? And play guitar like a genius?
Well, that's it. If Caitlin and Toms send in their questions soon, I'll go back and add my answers to this post. Looking forward to what everyone writes this week! DFTBA,
Emily
EDIT: We now have Caitlin's question, which I shall now answer. Caitlin, I did actually get yours in an email, but I forgot about it because I was copying the questions straight from Chuck's post. So, sorry about that.
Favourite film based on a book? And what film based on a book shouldn't have even been attempted being made or was completely ruined by the making of a film?
This is a good question. Before I answer, I want to share my little philosophy regarding film adaptations, which goes something like this: movies are different from books. Simple as that. I think it's unfair to expect absolute faithfulness to a book when film and literature are different mediums. It's the filmmakers' job to retell the story in the best way possible on screen, which almost always means it will have to differ somewhat from the source material. I think it's important to appreciate the challenges that film adaptation poses for filmmakers. After deciding this, I've found that watching good movies based on books is 10x more enjoyable than before.
That being said, some movies really really really ruined the books they were based on. Percy Jackson, for instance. And also Eragon. I absolutely hated what they did to Eragon.
I think I would have to say that Lord of the Rings is my favorite movie-based-on-a-book. The best part about it is, it stands alone as a series of films, and you can understand and appreciate the depth of the story without ever having read the book. That's what a good film adaptation should do. (However, I have read the books, and you should too! Reading is good for you.)
Okay, Emily out. :) DFTBA
Oh wait, one more thing-- I just saw John's question Tuesday video. Having not yet read The Great Gatsby, I'm going to join the Bluring Book club thingy and read it. Anyone going to join me?
Wow, I seriously didn't think anyone other than my sister and I had watched August Rush!
ReplyDeleteAs for your recital/graduation, I'm sure you'll do great as long as you remember to keep calm and dftba :)
and as for the x-man (man/men?) character, I think you are talking about Angel.
Thanks Sim! I'm still nervous but I think the recital is going to be okay. :)
ReplyDeleteI love August Rush. Although it bothered me that they went through the trouble of filming a real guitarist's hands at work, but had the actors fake on the cello and piano. It's a little painful to watch, since I play both of those instruments.
You're right, it is Angel. I could probably have just taken 10 seconds and googled it, but I'm too lazy... haha
