So, I survived my first week at college. It's pretty freaking great here. I want to tell you about everything! But I don't have time. So I will tell you about a few things. I'll start with my classes.
Principles of Music I
This is a basic music theory class. It's probably going to be review for me for several weeks, if not the whole first semester. The professor has been out of town this week, though, so a couple of upperclassmen have been reviewing the basics with us. They took this opportunity Monday morning, my very first class at college, to have a light saber fight in front of the class. One of them was wearing a dinosaur outfit. I'm not even kidding.
Intro to Christian Doctrine
The professor for this class is named Telford Work. He insists we call him by his first name. His rationale: "We call Jesus by his first name, and as this is a Christian Doctrine class, I think we should go by first names. If you don't like that, and you want to call me 'Dr. Work', I will call you by your last name. And if you want to call me 'Professor', that's okay; I can call you 'student.'" He's both brilliant and hilarious. Although everyone says he gives a
lot of homework, I'm looking forward to this class quite a bit.
Fitness for Life
Mandatory PE class. Basically, we sit and listen to Professor Town talk about why it's a good idea to exercise. I've never had any kind of PE class before, so I'm a little bit nervous about the part when we have to start doing push-ups and stuff, next week.
Studies in Literature
Professor Larsen-Hoeckley. This is another class I'm really excited about. Pretty much, we get to read books and talk about them. And eventually write about them.
Orchestra
It's a little confusing to explain who the proper director for the orchestra is, because the regular guy is technically on sabbatical. Dr. Mori is directing the whole orchestra for the first concert, and Dr. Ficsor is directing the strings for our own separate piece. I enjoy this "class" a lot because, first of all, I love making music; and second, because it's the only class where I completely understand what's expected of me, and I know my responsibilities. The music is difficult, but the setting is comfortingly familiar. I love it.
I have two more things that haven't started yet, private cello lessons and chamber music (string quartet). I'm a little nervous because there is a new cello teacher coming to the college this year and although I met the previous teacher, I haven't met this new guy. Everyone says he's really cool, though, so that's encouraging.
This weekend has been pretty fun. I've been hanging out with my new friends in lovely Santa Barbara (it's SO beautiful here). There's a beach. A BEACH! I come from the middle of the United States of America and we don't have ocean there. But here there is a lot of ocean! It's very exciting to me.
There's another thing I don't think I've mentioned. There are some people at a performing arts high school in Las Vegas who are working on a staging of Mike Lombardo's album "The Alchemist" and they want to use a song I wrote and put on YouTube. That's pretty cool, right?
I'm going to try and take pictures this week (or have my roommates do it with their nice cameras) and put them in my next post. I might be busy over the coming weekends but I am committed to writing on this blog every week! It's going to happen!
Anyway, I'm loving California, loving college, loving the people, loving life right now.
DFTBA,
Emily
